The Ocean Cleanup: Largest Clean-Up in History

Plastic pollution is one of the main problems when it comes to climate change. Not only does the making of plastic emit CO2, but it also pollutes the ocean. It seems as if no one can find a way to remove all or nearly all of the plastic in the ocean. But what if we could? Could The Ocean Cleanup be the organization that does it?

What is The Ocean Cleanup?

Millions of tons of plastic are poured into our oceans each year. 5 trillion tons of plastic are currently polluting the ocean. The majority of that is spilling from rivers. This plastic accumulates into garbage patches. One of the largest is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organization determined to get rid of 90% of the plastic in the ocean. To do that, they are finding ways to close the sources of plastic spilling into the ocean, and they are cleaning up what is already in the ocean.

It has been estimated that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch will take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to clean. With The Ocean Cleanup, they believe they will be able to clean 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years at a fraction of the cost.

The Ocean Cleanup has developed a system in which a long float sits on the water with a skirt hanging behind it. The floater provides buoyancy to the system. The skirt prevents debris from escaping from underneath and brings it into a retention system. Above the skirt is a cork line which prevents the skirt from overflowing.

The Ocean Cleanup has worked with a multitude of different companies, organizations, and governments. Some include The Government of the Netherlands, SalesForce, and Microsoft.

They have recently come out with sunglasses made from the plastic they have collected. Each pair of sunglasses bought allows The Ocean Cleanup to clean up to 24 football fields of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Their goal is to clean 500,000 football fields of plastic waste.
